Create your own Christmas Terrarium!
In case you missed our Terrarium class with the Social Creative on the weekend we decided to give you a quick lesson here, on how to make the perfect Christmas Terrarium.
Firstly, you will need to decide what kind of terrarium you want to create. Is this going to be a table piece, a Christmas favor for your guests or simply an item to decorate your house. You can use a glass bowl, jar, or even a drinking glass. We have a variety of options for any occasion.
If you are after something simple to use as a décor piece around your house, then this Adair’s vases are the perfect piece to use.
If you are after something a little bit Quirky you could grab this face vase from Bed Bath N Table.
If you are wanting to create something a bit more elevated for a Christmas Centre Piece, this trifle bowl would double perfectly.
Of if you were looking to make Christmas favours for your guests, than these Adairs martini glasses are the cutest.
Once you have chosen your item you will need to gather everything else you need to create your terrarium, this includes potting soil, small pebbles, activated charcoal and lastly and arguably most importantly, your plant! For terrariums due to the size, air plants, succulents and mini cacti work best.
Your first step for this terrarium is to place a layer of stones or pebbles on the bottom of your vessel, these act as a water drainage system for your plants roots. On top of this you will want to add a very thin layer of activated charcoal, this will fight off bacteria and keep water fresh. On top of the activated charcoal, you will add your soil, how much you put in is dependent on the roots of your plant and the size of your vase, generally 2 – 3 inches is sufficient.
Now it’s the fun bit, your plants! Place your plants in a hole burying the roots as you would do when potting any other plant. Once you have chosen the position of your plants and planted them all, the final step is to place stones on top.
Give your terrarium a quick spritz and it is ready to go!
If you want to make your terrarium a bit more festive, then there are multiple ways to do so. Bed Bath N Table have these beautiful porcelain reindeers available that can sit around the bottom of your terrarium.
If you wanted to use something more fun and quirkier Adairs has a selection of novelty decorations
If your terrarium is too small, some fake snow is the perfect option to sprinkle around your terrarium, on your plant and in the soil. You can purchase fake snow at most craft stores, use cotton wool or you can make it yourself using shaving cream and baking soda!
Have fun planting!
